Due to a technical fault, the water supply on the Mediterranean island of Capri failed on Saturday, 24.06.2024. As a result, access for tourists was prohibited and the ferry service was temporarily suspended. The situation was only defused again in the evening.
Tourists were not allowed to enter the popular vacation island of Capri on this day. The reason for this was a fault in an important water pipe that supplies Capri with drinking water from the mainland. Without this supply, the island did not have sufficient water reserves to meet the needs of the population and tourists.
After the water supply was restored, the ban was lifted in the evening, making the island accessible again.
The halt in tourist traffic immediately led to long queues at the ferry port in Naples. According to the Ansa news agency, the mayor stopped selling ferry tickets. Ferries already en route were instructed to turn back. Numerous travelers then waited at the sales points in Naples and Sorrento for the ferry service to resume.
On Thursday, Castellammare di Stabia, a municipality in the Campania region, experienced a fault in the main water pipe that supplies Capri and the Sorrento Peninsula with water. Although the repairs were completed on schedule, further technical difficulties arose, which ultimately led to the renewed water outage, according to the supplier Gori.
