How Digital Monitors Make Water Losses Visible

When the water runs at night and no one uses it

In drinking water networks, the night is a silent ally. When consumption drops, it's time for leak detection. Because constant flow during night hours can be a clear sign: somewhere in the network, the system is losing water. And this is precisely where the work of data loggers begins. Unobtrusive yet highly precise devices that help detect hidden leaks long before they become visible.

What do data loggers do?

Depending on their design, data loggers measure flow, pressure, or noise in the pipeline network. They are installed at strategically relevant points, such as transfer points or network branches. There, they regularly collect measurement data and store or transmit it for analysis.  For example: A logger performs a zone scan and shows a constant flow of 0.8 l/s over several nights, even though no water is being drawn. This is a typical indication of a leak. 

From Suspicion to Certainty: The Search for Leaks Begins

As soon as a suspicious flow is registered, the network is systematically analyzed. Water masters gradually shut off sections to narrow down the affected area. The smaller the zone, the more targeted the subsequent leak detection can be. 

Here, noise loggers such as the SmartEAR® are often employed. These devices 'listen' for suspicious hissing or whistling sounds in the pipeline system, which can indicate pressure losses due to leaks. Multiple loggers can be combined to determine a localization focus. 

Correlation for Precise Positioning

Once the suspected zone has been narrowed down, precise leak localization by correlation follows. Two sensors, known as correlators, are attached at different points along the pipeline. Both register the sound emanating from the leak. From the time difference of the sound between the sensors and the known sound velocity in the pipe material, the device calculates the exact location of the leak.  Example: The Correlux C-3 correlator delivers pinpoint accurate results under ideal conditions, often within a few meters, even with challenging pipe materials.

Successful leak detection is no longer a solitary discipline today. Data loggers, noise loggers, correlators, and modern cloud platforms work hand in hand: 

  • Data loggers provide the indications. 
  • Noise loggers assist in narrowing down the area. 
  • Correlators locate the leak.
  • The platform documents, archives, and links all information. 

This creates an intelligent early warning system for water distribution – proactive rather than reactive. 

How to Get the Most Out of Your Logger Network

  • Utilize nighttime quiet: The most conclusive flow data is generated between 2:00 and 4:00 AM. 
  • Define small zones: The finer the network structure, the easier it is to locate water losses due to leaks. 
  • Evaluate Data Regularly: Continuous monitoring helps detect even insidious damage. 
  • Combine Systems: Data loggers and correlators together provide the most reliable picture.
