Noise logger for leak monitoring in drinking water networks
Whether used individually or as a networked system, noise loggers make the invisible visible. They provide crucial data for the sustainable, economical, and safe operation of drinking water networks. With innovative solutions such as SmartEAR® and the POSEYEDON® cloud, SebaKMT® sets standards in intelligent leak monitoring.
What is a noise logger?
A noise logger is a digital measuring device for acoustic monitoring of drinking water pipes. It detects and documents characteristic noises caused by leaks in pipes – known as leak noise. The loggers are mounted directly on fittings such as gate valves, hydrants, or house connection valves and record the sound activity in the network over defined periods of time.
How does a noise logger work?
A noise logger records the sound waves that propagate through the pipe system. If water escapes from a leak, a continuous leak noise is generated, which is transmitted along the pipe walls over long distances. The logger records and evaluates these noises.
Modern devices – such as SmartEAR® – use intelligent algorithms to distinguish between ambient noise (e.g., traffic noise, pump noise) and typical leak signals. This allows actual leaks to be reliably detected and pinpointed – even in complex network structures or noisy environments.
Why are noise loggers important for drinking water supply?
Noise loggers enable early detection of such weak points before serious damage such as pipe bursts occurs. Through continuous monitoring, they make a decisive contribution to minimizing water loss, increasing network stability, and protecting water resources in a sustainable manner.
Your advantages at a glance:
- Early leak detection.
- Efficient network monitoring: Particularly suitable for nighttime measurements.
- Automated evaluation: Time savings for your team.
- Reduction in operating costs: fewer losses, less effort.
- Upgradeable and cloud-based.
Areas of application for noise loggers
- Monitoring of main and feeder lines.
- Inspection of problematic sections of the network.
- Network analyses in water protection areas.
- Prevention of pipe bursts.
- Follow-up on reports of leaks from the public.
Noise logger with cloud connection
The latest generation of noise loggers – such as SmartEAR® from SebaKMT® – takes leak monitoring to a whole new level. These devices transmit the recorded noise data via mobile communication standards such as NB-IoT or LTE-M directly to the POSEYEDON® cloud.
There, they are available to water managers and technical managers—including visual and acoustic evaluation. This makes it easy to analyze and evaluate suspected leak locations—regardless of location, whether in the office or on the road.
Noise loggers compared to other leak detection systems
While devices such as correlators or ground microphones are used specifically for pinpoint leak detection, noise loggers are used for comprehensive monitoring of the pipe network.
They detect unusual noise patterns and automatically sound the alarm if potential damage is detected. This creates an effective early warning system that enables targeted and efficient follow-up with other location methods—before major damage occurs.
| method | benefits | time of deployment |
|---|---|---|
| Noise logger | Area control, long-term monitoring | Early stage, permanent |
| Correlator | Precise location | After notification message / logger alarm |
| Ground microphone | fine positioning | Final step in the repair process |
