What is a noise logger?

A noise logger is a digital measuring device for acoustic monitoring of drinking water pipes. It detects and documents characteristic noises caused by leaks in pipes – known as leak noise. The loggers are mounted directly on fittings such as gate valves, hydrants, or house connection valves and record the sound activity in the network over defined periods of time.

How does a noise logger work?

A noise logger records the sound waves that propagate through the pipe system. If water escapes from a leak, a continuous leak noise is generated, which is transmitted along the pipe walls over long distances. The logger records and evaluates these noises. 

Modern devices – such as SmartEAR® – use intelligent algorithms to distinguish between ambient noise (e.g., traffic noise, pump noise) and typical leak signals. This allows actual leaks to be reliably detected and pinpointed – even in complex network structures or noisy environments.
