Due to a technical malfunction, the water supply on the Mediterranean island of Capri failed on Saturday, June 24, 2024. As a result, access for tourists was prohibited, and ferry service was temporarily suspended. It was not until the evening that the situation was resolved.
Tourists were not allowed to set foot on the popular vacation island of Capri that day. The reason was a break in a major water main that supplies Capri with drinking water from the mainland. Without this supply, the island did not have sufficient water reserves to meet the needs of its residents and tourists.
After the water supply was restored, the ban was lifted that evening, making the island accessible again.
At the Naples ferry terminal, the suspension of tourist service immediately led to long lines. According to the Ansa news agency, the mayor suspended the sale of ferry tickets. Ferries already underway were instructed to turn back. As a result, numerous travelers waited at the ticket offices in Naples and Sorrento for ferry service to resume.
As early as Thursday, a malfunction had occurred in Castellammare di Stabia, a municipality in the Campania region, affecting the main water pipeline that supplies Capri and the Sorrento Peninsula. Although the repairs were completed on schedule, further technical difficulties arose, which ultimately led to another water outage, according to the utility company Gori.
