Capri Island: Water supply collapsed

Due to a technical malfunction, the water supply on the Mediterranean island of Capri failed on Saturday, June 24, 2024. Tourists were subsequently denied access, and ferry service was temporarily suspended. It was not until the evening that the situation was resolved.

Tourists were not allowed to enter the popular vacation island of Capri on that day. The reason for this was a defect in an important water pipe that supplies Capri with drinking water from the mainland. Without this supply, the island did not have sufficient water reserves to meet the needs of the population and tourists.

After the water supply was restored, the ban was lifted in the evening, making the island accessible again.

At the ferry port in Naples, the halt in tourist traffic immediately led to long queues. According to the Ansa news agency, the mayor suspended the sale of ferry tickets. Ferries already underway were instructed to turn back. As a result, numerous travelers waited at the ticket offices in Naples and Sorrento for ferry services to resume.

On Thursday, there had already been a fault in the main water pipe supplying Capri and the Sorrento Peninsula with water in Castellammare di Stabia, a municipality in the Campania region. Although the repairs were completed as planned, further technical difficulties arose, which ultimately led to another water outage, according to the utility company Gori.
